Learn Italian in Song: Questo Piccolo Grande Amore

Claudio Baglioni in concert 2010

This Small, Great Love

Claudio Baglioni, 1973

Another classic that everyone knows, perhaps the most famous from pop star Claudio Baglione. This translation was originally done by reader Jared Hill, who had looked for it on my site but didn’t find it, and quite rightly pointed out that it should be here! I have changed his translation a bit – his version was more poetic, but I do these song translations quite literally, to better help people learning Italian.

A commenter has supplied some alternative, slightly spicier lyrics. Possibly the lyrics I found had been cleaned up for tenderer ears.

Aside: Baglione for years owned a condo in the same building as Enrico’s parents in Rome, so the family knew all the gossip about him (via the portinaio – building concierges in Italy, both male and female, are famous for gossip). Every year on Claudio’s birthday, young fans would put a banner on the fence across the street: “Tanti Auguri Claudio.”

Quella sua maglietta finaThat thin shirt she wore
tanto stretta al punto che mi immaginavo tuttoTight enough that I could imagine everything
e quell’aria da bambinaAnd that childish air about her
che non gliel’ho detto mai ma ioI never told her, but
ci andavo matto…I was crazy for it…
E chiare sere d’estateAnd clear summer evenings
il mare i giochi le fateThe sea, the games, the fairies
e la paura e la voglia di essere nudi (soli)The fear and the desire to be naked (alone)
un bacio a labbra salateA kiss on salty lips
un fuoco quattro risateA fire, a few laughs
e far l’amore già al faro…Making love down at the lighthouse
ti amo davvero… ti amo lo giuro…I really love you, I love you, I swear it
ti amo ti amo davvero…I love you, I really love you
E leiAnd she
lei mi guardava con sospettoShe looked at me with suspicion
poi mi sorrideva e mi teneva stretto stretto…Then she smiled at me, and held me tight
ed ioAnd I
io non ho mai capito nienteI never understood anything
visto che oramai non me lo levo dalla mente che lei…Seeing that now I can’t get it out of my mind that she
(ritornello)(refrain)
Lei era un piccolo grande amoreShe was a small great love
solo un piccolo grande amoreJust a small great love
niente piú di questo… niente piú…Nothing more than this nothing more
Mi manca da morireI miss her to die
quel suo piccolo grande amoreThat small great love of hers
adesso che saprei cosa direNow that I would know what to say
adesso che saprei cosa fareNow that I would know what to do
adesso che…Now that
voglio un piccolo grande amore… (ritornello)I want a small great love (refrain)
Quella camminata stranaThat strange walk
pure in mezzo a chissacchéEven in the middle of who knows what
l’avrei riconosciutaI would have recognized her
mi diceva “sei una frana”She said, “You’re a disaster’
But this I never believed for a second…
E lunghe corse affannateAnd long breathless runs
incontro a stelle caduteTowards fallen stars
e mani sempre piú ansioseHands becoming more and more anxious,
e le canzoni stonateAnd the out-of-tune songs
urlate al cielo lassu’Shouted to the heavens above
“chi arriva prima a quel muro…”“Whoever reaches that wall first…”
non sono sicuro se ti amo davvero…I’m not sure if I love you for real
ma le si leggeva chiaro in faccia che soffriva…But you could see in her face that she was suffering
ed io, io non lo so quant’é che ha piantoAnd I, I don’t know how much she cried
solamente adesso me ne sto rendendo contoOnly now do I realize
che lei… (ritornello)That she… (refrain)

  1. Salve….

    Massimiliano

  2. BTW I think the version saying “nudi” and “di cose proibite” was the original one, whereas the other words are from a censored version that Baglioni was forced to sing when on state television.

  3. (pretty much the same reason why Dalla instead of singing “e ancora adesso che bestemmio e bevo vino per i ladri e le puttane sono Gesù Bambino” had to sing “e ancora adesso che gioco a carte e bevo vino per la gente del porto sono Gesù Bambino”).
