Neri Per Caso - Le ragazze - Viva la mamma

Only in Italy would you get a pop song celebrating dear old mom! But it’s also a bit of nostalgia for the 1950s, the hectic post-war period when Italy was booming.

The italicized parts are not in the Neri per Caso cover.

C’e’ folla tutte le sere  There’s a crowd every evening
nei cinema di Bagnoli  In the cinemas of Bagnoli*
un sogno che in bianco e nero  A dream in black and white
tra poco sara’ a colori  That soon will be in color
l’estate che passa in fretta  The summer that passes in a hurry
l’estate che torna ancora  The summer that returns again
i giochi messi da parte The toys put away
per una chitarra nuova… For a new guitar.
Viva la mamma Hurray for Mom!
affezionata a quella gonna un po’ lunga Fond of that skirt [that’s] a little too long
cosi’ elegantemente anni cinquanta So elegantly 1950s
sempre cosi’ sincera. Always so sincere.
Viva la mamma
viva le donne con i piedi per terra Hurray for the women with their feet on the ground
le sorridenti miss del dopoguerra The smiling misses* of the post-war period
pettinate come lei. With hairstyles like hers.

Angeli ballano il rock ora Angels now dance rock
tu non sei un sogno – tu sei vera. You’re not a dream – you’re real
Viva la mamma perche’ Hurray for Mom because
se ti parlo di lei non sei gelosa! If I talk about her, you’re not jealous!
Viva la mamma
affezionata a quella gonna un po’ lunga
indaffarata sempre e sempre convinta Always busy and always convinced [sure of herself]
a volte un po’ severa. Sometimes a bit severe
Viva la mamma
viva la favola degli anni cinquanta Hurray for the fable of the 50s
cosi’ lontana eppure cosi’ moderna So far away and yet so modern
e cosi’ magica. And so magical.
Angeli ballano il rock ora
non un juke box, un’orchestra vera. It’s not a jukebox, it’s a real orchestra
Viva la mamma perche’
se ti parlo di lei non sei gelosa!
Bang bang la sveglia che suona  [knock knock] the alarm that rings
bang bang devi andare a scuola  [knock knock] you have to go to school
bang bang soltanto un momento  [knock knock] just a moment
per sognare ancora!  to dream still!
Viva la mamma
affezionata a quella gonna un po’ lunga
cosi’ elegantemente anni cinquanta
sempre cosi’ sincera.
Viva la mamma
viva le regole e le buone maniere Hurray for the rules and good manners
quelle che non ho mai Those that I never
saputo imparare knew how to learn
forse per colpa del rock… Perhaps because of [the fault of] rock.

* “Miss” is used in Italian in the sense of “Miss Italia” etc. – a beauty contest winner. * A neighborhood of Napoli
