I also hope it's k to comment on this. It is quite funy to see that most of the comments are coming in 1 year after the post.

It is great to hear about the changes in indian culture. I guess a lot of people on the west, still think of situations like the first picture.

I hope it's OK to comment on an older post ... I found you via a search for "barista" of all things.

Those are remarkable changes in Indian society and consumer culture. And like a couple of your previous commenters, I'm very surprised to hear about Indian wine.

Fantastic pictures of vegetable shops. Takes me back to my trips to India. Interesting that they are now growing crops which 10 or 20 years ago they weren't.

I have never had Indian wine - that's an experience I'd like to have.

Cheers

the world is changing, India too... it's still a poor country, but they have a big potential. I;ve read somewhere, that in 2040, India will be one of 4 most powerful countries in the world.

Deirdre -
Great essay (as always) on consumer products in India. I am also traveling there now and would like to add one comment. When we lived there in the late 1970s as you did, we had to constantly plan for drinking water, needing to boil it. One of the greatest things for us now is that you can buy purified bottled water everywhere. Of course the disposal problem of all those plastic bottles is a major problem, the downside of many upsides of product availability.

Beautiful pictures and colors, and I'm really enjoying your perspective on how much the country has changed. Since I just went there for the first time, it's hard to tell what's progress / globalization / improvements and what's changed.
