Devil’s Garden, Escalante

August 15, 2009

Escalante National Monument seems nearly deserted in comparison with its more famous siblings such as Bryce and Zion. But it’s worth the visit for gems such as the Devil’s Garden: 12 miles down a dirt road, you have your own private wonderland of arches, mushroom rocks, and slickrock to climb on.

Bryce Canyon

^ This shirt is a (brilliant!) souvenir from the Woodstock School class of ’79 reunion. Photo taken at the end of a two-hour hike into the canyon and back (via the Queen’s Garden and Navajo Loop trails), the last bit of which did not do my fear of heights any good at all (notice how [...]

Zion

These Thai women were monopolizing the scenic rocks. Their counting “neung, song, sam…” brought back childhood Thai lessons at the International School in Bangkok. I can still count to ten in Thai!

Had a very busy week with Sun events in San Francisco, for which my husband joined me on the tail end of his two-and-a-half month research trip to Columbia, MO. St. Patrick’s Day Parade, NYC

April 11, 2009

Ross and I arrived in New York the morning of St. Patrick’s Day – a mistake I will never make again. Our taxi had to drop us two blocks from the Roosevelt hotel because the streets were already blocked off. We then had to fight our way through the crowds (with our suitcases) to reach [...]

On our way to St. Barth’s, Ross and I stayed overnight with my classmate Sarah and her husband Dave, who met playing music. November 22, 2008

SuperComputing 08, held in Austin, Texas, was a huge show and a huge effort for many of us at Sun, especially Rich Brueckner. The Sun booth was humming, attractions included Scott Tokar, a magician, and Rich’s Java Chopper, complete with biker chicks.

I’ve Been to the Zoo, Zoo, Zoo…

November 9, 2008

About ten years ago we made a family trip to San Diego, visiting all the main attractions, and came away with many happy memories. This week I’m back (to film part of the LISA conference) and was happy, in a very hectic month, to have a day to myself. So I went to the San [...]

Minnesota Hot Dish

October 29, 2008

This week I visited my colleagues in Eagan, Minnesota, to capture on film their various expertise (don’t ask me to explain what they do, I stay behind the camera for a reason). There were several other visitors, so the Eagan folks organized a traditional Minnesota potluck, with traditional Minnesota foods such as Mexican lasagna, jello [...]
