Political Contrasts

May 22, 2006

During the recent election campaign, I saw these three posters together on a wall in Mantova.

above, from left to right: The "Antifascist" Italian Refounded Communists, "No to the Invasion of Chinese Goods" from the anti-immigrant Lega Nord, and a recruitment poster for the CISL national trade union.

During election season, special hoardings are put up to hold election posters like this, with specific permissions about who gets how much space and where (I have no idea how this is allocated). Which doesn't stop over-enthusiastic campaigners plastering their own posters on top of others' (as you can see here), or on any other flat surface. Then the comune goes around and puts diagonal strips across them reading "Affissione abusiva" (illegal posting).
