Erotika

An ad for a (possibly mythical) Italian porn site. Soundtrack not safe for work, but the video is actually totally clean.

The line near the end says: "Some films you don't choose for their dialog."

Found on Spotanatomy, a fun Italian blog about advertising.

Lo Svarione degli Anelli

Jan 10, 2007

Italians have not been slow to join the phenomenon of user-generated media and fanvids. Italian teens go to YouTube and the P2P networks to view/download La Compagnia del Verginello (The Fellowship of the Virgin) and I Due Porri (The Two Leeks), the first two episodes of the epic Lord of the Rings trilogy - dubbed over as an Italian stoner movie. I kid you not. It's titled Lo Svarione degli Anelli - "Stone of the Rings" is the literal translation, but I prefer "Lord of the [Smoke] Rings".

Our heroes Godo ("I come"), Samgay, Ganjalf, Arabong, and Rizlas set out to destroy the ring belonging to the evil Svarion. At the end of the first episode, Ganjalf falls to his death - a great tragedy for the company as all the canapa is in his pockets!

Protest Music

Franco Trincale, il Cantastorie (The Storysinger) - We used to see him singing in Milan's Piazza Duomo every weekend, and even bought one of his CDs, must have been around 2000 since it featured a satirical song about George Bush and his then-opponent Al Gore, called "The Lords of the World." Hear some of his songs here.

Ringtones

Dec 20, 2004

A segment on The Daily Show, and the recent announcement that Napster (aka Roxio) will sell ringtones for cellphones, inform me that personalizing your ringtone is a new concept to Americans. So Europeans are actually ahead of the technology curve for once!

Here, a personalized ringtone is a public statement about yourself and your tastes - a statement that an entire train car or busload of people might hear, so choose it carefully. It can be the latest pop hit, heavy metal, hip hop, etc., some catchy classical melody, or (on some newer phones) birdsong or other natural noises.

There's a purely practical reason to personalize your ringtone. Italy has one of the world's highest rates of cellphone ownership - if we all had the same ringtone, we'd never know whose phone was ringing, and you'd see the comic spectacle of everyone simultaneously diving for their pockets and purses.

Of course, with so many cellphones, there's bound to be some duplication, especially of current pop tunes. I'm pretty sure, however, that I am the only person in Italy using the theme from Blackadder as my ringtone.

Bruno Bozzetto

Jan 10, 2004

The Bozzetto animated cartoon about Italy vs. Europe has been circulating online for some months, but John F. kindly sent me a link to a site which also has some other Bozzetto pieces. "Yes & No" will be particularly apt for anyone studying for an Italian driver's exam!
