Caryatids were originally supposed to look cool, calm, and collected (judging from early Greek and Roman examples), as if carrying a building on their heads was easy. But I've found many who look distinctly unhappy about their jobs, and often in some degree of pain, like the quartet above in Salzburg. Well, who wouldn't be?
These ladies in Milan seem to be keeping a stiff upper lip, rather bored, even. But not this chap:
