sitar: Sanjeeb Sircar - tabla: Bharat Shinde The bloggy stuff about this video has moved here. Tech NotesHere's the video-posting routine I have settled on for the time being:
- Shoot video with a digital video camera (a Sony borrowed from the office, so far).
- Move video from tape to computer hard disk using a FireWire cable and Roxio's DVD Builder 6. This creates a very large .avi file, 12 GB for a full hour of video (all the more reason to shoot short).
- Open Windows Movie Maker (included with the XP operating system, upgrade available free from Microsoft.com) and drag the video file onto it.
- Right-click on the video image in the window and select "Create Clips." This goes through the video and splits it into more or less logical scenes. Save the project.
- Do other editing as desired within Movie Maker. Save the project frequently, because Movie Maker crashes often.
- Drag the desired clips into the storyboard at the bottom of the window until I have the movie I want (again, save frequently!).
- Select "Save to my computer" and save the completed movie as DV-AVI (PAL) - this should be the same as the original format I shot it in.
- Open Sorenson Squeeze (I have the Flash version), drag in the new .avi file I just made.
- Select compression settings depending on the material. For my site, I use a frame size of 320x240 pixels. Other settings vary, for example where the sound is important, as in the videos on this page, I set higher data rates for audio output. When sound is less important, I set them lower to get the overall file size down.
- Squeeze the file, copy the resulting SWF (Shockwave Flash) file to my website, and put it on the appropriate web page.
