Dear women engineers: I am truly, deeply tired of hearing you complain about how terrible it is to be mistaken for anything other than an engineer. And God forbid anyone should imagine for a second that you work in (shudder)… marketing. 1/
You know what that is? It’s you playing straight into the PATRIARCHY. You have clawed your way to the top of the male-dominated tech hierarchy, and now you don’t want to be associated with “the girly stuff.” 2/
You join the men that you complain about in denigrating what you and they consider “women’s work.” You just want to be treated like one of the boys. Well, you’re certainly behaving like them. 3/
You act as if certain roles (marketing, HR, admin) are women’s work, and are less important than engineering. What is that if not patriarchy? And I’ve got news for you: it takes all of us together to run a successful company. 4/
Marketing can be a lot more “technical” and difficult than you imagine. I have been working in tech since some of you were in diapers. True, I can’t do your job – I’ve never been a coder. BUT YOU CAN’T DO MINE, EITHER. 5/
So, cut that shit out. You’re an engineer? Fine. I’m a marketer. I’m still your sister in this difficult, male-heavy world of tech, and I absolutely demand your respect – as well as men’s. As I in turn give you respect and support. Because that’s what sisters do for each other, and it’s what we need to do to help each other survive and thrive in this. 7/
If you can’t do that for me and every other woman, no matter her role, GTFO – you’re not a feminist; you’re just an asshole. /end
